One of the most notorious games out there and the one I get dozens of questions about is certainly Dark Souls. The questions range from: “How are you supposed to beat this game?” to “Should I even play it as a beginner if it is so difficult?” People are confused, some of them even angry – we all know how angry dying in a game over and over again can make you feel – but I am here today to answer some of these questions and perhaps redeem Dark Souls as much as I can. If you cannot tell already, I like this game a lot and I hope by the end of this article you feel more motivated to play it as well.
Why are these games difficult?
Well, these games are difficult because… they are meant to be that way. It has nothing to do with your “bad” gaming skills or experience, these games should be pretty difficult for everyone. Of course, if you are a complete beginner, these might be too difficult to even try, but they are supposed to be difficult for all players regardless of their level of experience. You might be wondering why anyone would want to play a game that is so tough that it makes most of the players give up, but in fact, there are a lot of people looking for these kinds of games – games that take time and effort and that you cannot beat on your first try.
What is so difficult about them?
The biggest difficulty people have when playing Dark Souls are the bosses. Not only do they seem incredibly hard to beat, but also there are so many of them!. Beating bosses is especially hard to do if you did not upgrade your weapon and cannot make any significant damage. However, in my opinion the reason these games are notorious for their difficulty is that every wrong move has a consequence. First time I played it I felt like I was dying every 10 minutes. Above all this, the game doesn’t help you in any way like I was used to with many other games. It doesn’t tell you where you need to go or exactly what to do – it kind of just throws you in and you have to fend for yourself and figure things out on your own.
How do you beat them?
Believe it or not, there is a way to beat all of the Dark Souls games – you just have to be persistent. I know, I know, this isn’t really a quick fix you were looking for, but it is true. Whenever you die you will learn what not to do next time. It is that simple. The game was designed to be played for a long period of time during which you learn, very slowly, all of the ways in which to find bosses’ weaknesses and ways to beat them. Just enjoy the process and you will have a wonderful time playing Dark Souls.
